Paediatric Department

The pediatric department of the Jihlava hospital was one of the first established after World War II.

In 1945, the building of the temporarily housed ear department between 1944-45 was modified. MUDr. Pavel Ševčík - a student of the famous Prof. Otakar Teychl - became the head of the pediatric department. The opening of the pediatric department was an important milestone in the child care in the city and in the whole Jihlava district.

MUDr. Ševčík took over the management of child care not only in the institute but also in the field, which resulted in a decrease in child and especially infant mortality. A significant role was played by the children's specialist counselling centres, gradually established and maintained by the District Care for Children and Youth.

In 1953, a new children's ward was opened, built from a former printing house with a capacity of 80 beds. The building was two-storeyed, the ground floor housed an ambulance, doctors' rooms, nurses' rooms and a group of three rooms serving as a children's ear ward.

Infants and toddlers were placed on the first floor. On the 2nd floor were older children and mothers with infants. The concept of the whole pavilion was very modern. The building, designed in a box-like manner, was in keeping with the knowledge of child care at the time. Both parts of the infant hospital were of great importance in the care of premature and pathological newborns. Both the children's ward and the infant institute cooperated with the regional physician in child care, MUDr. Alex Nosek. Prim. Pavel Ševčík, M.D., continued his scientific work in Brno, with Professor Lhoták and Prim. Malbohan in 1956, he wrote a monograph Sudden Events in Paediatrics.

Ševčík headed the department until 1979. Over 70 doctors who passed through the department have strengthened the field services and work not only in the Jihlava region but throughout the Czech Republic.

In 1979, MUDr. Alois Hofštetr became the head of the department. He faithfully ensured the continuation of good child care and education of the doctors. He had a great support in MUDr. Alena Chejnovská, deputy of the head-doctor Ševčík, who worked in this position from 1957 to 1991.

In the vacant part of the nursing home on tr. Legionářů a special differentiated care unit was opened in 1988 under the direction of MUDr. Josef Nováček. This led to a significant improvement in the provision of emergency hospital care at the respective well-equipped inpatient stations.

Since 1991, MUDr. Hana Bartošová has been the deputy head of the department and after MUDr. Hofštetr left for private practice in 1993, the children's department began to work under the leadership of MUDr. Milan Svojsik.

In 1994, the children's ward was moved to the gynaecology and obstetrics pavilion of the new hospital.

In 1999, the neonatal ICU and the ICU for larger children underwent extensive reconstruction.

The head-doctor Milan Svojsík was the head of the children's ward for 21 years. During this period, the children's ward obtained Type II accreditation - training future doctors, expanding specialist consulting rooms, increasing the expertise of doctors and non-medical staff. The department is also flourishing in terms of instrumentation. Cooperation with foundations and civic associations is emerging. The examination rooms and standard departments are gradually being renovated.

• In December 2007 we obtained the status of a children's section of   DIA CENTRE JIHLAVA.
•  The department holds the title BABY FRIENDLY HOSPITAL.
•  In December 2013 we acquired STATUS OF THE CENTRE FOR BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF GIT IN CHILDREN.

Currently, the Pediatric Department of the Hospital Jihlava provides care for children from 0-18 years of age in five inpatient stations, with a total of 59 beds. Professional care is provided by 10 doctors headed by MUDr. Martin Zimen. Nursing care is provided by 55 medical workers under the direction of head nurse Jana Zejdová.
