Quality and safe care
Hospital Jihlava, contributory organisation
Health Promoting Hospitals – HPH
Almost twenty years ago, the World Health Organization initiated the project of health promotion in hospitals, and subsequently the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals was created. Today, the organisation brings together 850 health facilities from all over the world. Our hospital has been a member of this network since 2011. We have also joined the National Network of Health Promoting Hospitals, where the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic is the coordinator. 11 healthcare facilities are currently registered and cooperating in the national network. The aim is to integrate health promotion activities into the strategy, plans and activities of health care facilities, to direct health education and promotion not only to patients and their relatives, but also to health care professionals.
Why are we a health promoting hospital?
There are many reasons for health promotion activities. Most of our admitted patients have one or more chronic conditions that require support and help to cope with their illness in addition to medical interventions and drug therapy to achieve the highest quality of life. They often need support in relation to necessary lifestyle changes or adherence to a medication and dietary regimen.
The evidence suggests that the experience of illness and change in health status makes patients more receptive to advice and information from health professionals. The hospital stay is the most convenient time to intervene to change habits and modify lifestyle, so it is important to take advantage of this situation to encourage patients to change.
As the hospital is also a high-risk workplace for healthcare workers in terms of work stress and professional responsibility, activities aimed at employees are important for health promotion, prevention of civilisation diseases and burnout syndrome.
Hospital Jihlava, as a member of the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH), continuously promotes health promotion activities aimed at educating clients and employees to make the right lifestyle choices in order to gain the interest of a large number of people in their health, strengthen the responsibility of clients in managing health problems, increase control over their health and continuously improve it.
